9 Fashion Essentials for Spring 2014 ...

By Laura

Thanks to the fashion world's love for creaming over fashion essentials for spring 2014 during the winter, we've known what's in and what's out for a little while now. If you're anything like me (i.e. you live somewhere cold and wet), you can happily ignore these essentials for spring 2014 for bit. Recently I have taken to buying them, and a lot have come in vintage form. There are a lot of '70s, '80s, and '90s throwbacks for spring 2014. Here are some of them.

Skirts and Shirts

Skirts and Shirts When I picked up a copy of Tatler at a gas station in December and read about this one I was over the moon. This is one of those fashion essentials for spring 2014 you could have done with nailing during your teenage years, when skirts and shirts were often a requirement for school. Apologies if you went somewhere that didn't require a uniform. I, however, went to a Catholic school that demanded THE strictest uniform ever. Now I am in my twenties and finding the whole skirts and shirts thing quite comfy and stylish at the same time. Why couldn't this have happened when I was 14?

Contrast Collars

Contrast Collars In short, contrast collars are collars that are different to your shirt. This trend has popped up a couple of times in the last few years. Mainly in the form of Peter Pan collars, which I absolutely loathe. Contrast collars can look a little seventies if you are wanting to go for vintage shops. I recently found a bird shirt via eBay with a black collar. It is much prettier than it sounds.

Tea Length Skirts

Tea Length Skirts Er, hello Mrs Stepford Wife, how are you doing? Yep, tea length skirts in all their prissy glory are back. Owing to the fact that my hips and boobs are huge, I might want to dodge this one. I also do not pull off girly too well? However, there are many, many ladies out there who do. So think flowers and pastels, and go for something quaint.

Pastels

Pastels Hallelujah for pastels! I love black, it is slimming. However, it does make me feel a bit dour at times. Recent brights and neon trends have left me feeling a bit too Madonna. Pastels work well for me, and many women, as they look great with jeans when they come in the form of blazers. Huge pastel culottes were huge on the catwalks at recent fashion weeks worldwide. Finally we can kiss goodbye to those glorified panties that people have been calling shorts for the past two years.

Baseball Jackets

Baseball Jackets I love baseball jackets. I have never watched a game of baseball in my life, but I love the women's jackets based on the outfits players wear. What I really love about the re-emergence of baseball jackets is how they go hand-in-hand with casual looks, yet you are still on trend. I went to an exam recently with sneakers, a baseball jacket, leggings, and one of my favorite tops. It was casual as hell, yet I didn't feel slummy.

Wide Leg Trousers

Wide Leg Trousers Again, yay for the bagginess! Jeggings and skinny jeans look amazing on some of us, but my Beyonce-esque thighs don't really allow for them to look normal. I don't rock thighs like her, sadly. Wide leg trousers, on the other hand, are kind to my thighs and hips. Some I have seen are seriously seventies too, which I absolutely adore.

7

Box Jackets

Box Jackets Box jackets are basically short jackets. I happen to think they look incredibly cute during the spring, but I am yet to find one that doesn't look ridiculous alongside my massive boobs. In my opinion, box jackets work well with the pastel trend. Especially in denim. That's a great way to nail two Spring 2014 trends right there.

8

Light Sweaters

Light Sweaters The more I write this, the more I feel like 2014's spring trends have been designed for me. As much as I'd like to enjoy actual spring weather, I live in Wales so that rarely happens. This is why I love the whole light sweater thing. I am going to invest in Vivienne Westwood's 2013 advice and buy a couple of really amazing ones, rather than budget ones. They'll last longer, and should look great with almost anything.

Orange is the New Black

Orange is the New Black No, I am not talking about the amazing Netflix series. However, the sooner season 2 kicks off the better...Anyway, orange has been one of THE key colors at recent catwalk shows. You know how one year it was coral, another it was yellow...now we are on to orange. Do I like this? No, orange makes me look ridiculous. However, I am sure it is going to work for plenty of you.

I don't know whether this is because I have an aversion to throwing stuff out, but a lot of my wardrobe meets the demands of spring 2014 already. I am, however, lacking in wide leg trousers. Bring on the shopping. Which of these trends do you want to make the most of this year?
