7 Unexpected Fashion Week Trends and How to Wear Them ...

By Sophia

Unexpected fashion week trends are usually the ones that have us questioning our commitment to fashion. While some fashion week trends are predictable – dark colours in winter, pastels in spring, wacky and impractical shoes 99% of the time – designers have a tendency to always throw something unexpected into the mix. It could be something completely zany or a trend that we never would have thought would make it onto the runway. Take a look at these unexpected fashion week trends.

Dresses over Pants

Dresses over Pants One of the most unexpected fashion week trends was the dresses over pants look. I thought this was a trend that we had well and truly left in the nineties but it seems like we’re in for a revival of sorts. Designers like Giorgio Armani, Rebecca Taylor, and MSGM all included variations of this layered look in their Fall 2014 ready-to-wear collections. Make this look work off the runway by teaming shift dress over fitted leather-look pants.

2

Blanket Coats

Blanket Coats Sometimes fashion can leave us scratching our heads. And the trend for blanket-looking coats will leave many non-fashion folk confused. At Burberry, models were draped with what look like checked blankets and Suno, Tommy Hilfiger, and Ferragamo all led models down the runway in jackets and coats that resembled throw blankets. If you can’t afford a designer number, you could probably get away with wearing a throw blanket and calling it fashion. Just remember to cinch it in at the waist to create some shape.

3

Exaggerated Head Gear

Statement head gear was a popular choice for many designers this season. There were furry hats at Fendi and Badgley Mischka, western cowboy hats at Cushnie et Ochs, and extra wide brims at Concept Korea. The message we got from designers was that bigger is most definitely better. Simply add a wide brimmed hat into your arsenal to create some chic looks.

4

Star Wars

Believe it or not but Star Wars references popped up at more than one show during the Fall 2014 fashion weeks. Rodarte sent models down the runway in dresses that featured prints of various Star Wars characters and Preen featured Darth Vader prints on various designs. It seems like geek chic is taking on a whole new turn. Incorporating this trend into your wardrobe is as simple as popping on a Star Wars printed t-shirt.

5

Puffer Jackets

Puffer Jackets Puffer jackets are a practical choice for many, but who would have thought that we would be seeing them take centre stage on the designer runways? Labels like Fendi, Max Mara, J.Crew, and even Topshop sent models down the runway in puffer jackets. Could it be that puffer jackets are now at the height of chic? It’s a comforting thought next time you have to don a bulky puffer jacket, anyway.

Famous Quotes

To give oneself earnestly to the duties due to men, and, while respecting spiritual beings, to keep aloof from them, may be called wisdom.

Structural Clothing

Structural Clothing Designers are known for pushing boundaries and their designs often come in exaggerated shapes and silhouettes. Structured silhouettes were taken to the next level for as designers like Christopher Kane created clothes with 3D origami-like structures. A wardrobe-friendly way to incorporate this trend into your wardrobe would be with clothes that feature fold-over details.

7

Graphic Fur

Graphic Fur Classic fur coats seem to be so passé. It’s all about graphic fur now. Designers have dabbled with coloured and ombré fur in the past but at the Fall 2014 shows we saw a trend for bold, graphic fur designs. Grid-like patterns graced the stage at Altuzarra and Roksanda Ilincic, and Diane von Furstenberg worked an updated abstract animal print pattern. Choose the faux-fur variety for your wardrobe and team graphic coats with basic outfits.

These are some of the more unexpected trends we’ve noticed popping up at various fashion weeks so far. Would you try any of these trends? What fashion trend would you never go near?

Where Thoughts and Opinions Converge

Wait but Start Wars for the win! I'm pretty sure most of these outfits aren't exactly meant to just be worn out and about. If you look at them as less practical and more as a kind of art or attention grabbing for the actual clothing it's actually beautiful.

I love the faux fur goat

Those are trends for runways maybe pretty awful (except Cara's coat!)

The last 2 trends are beautiful but the rest? Yawn.

Im sorry but this is dumb

Can't open. :(
