Every girl knows that there are styles that do not suit your body type. In order to dress well, you must first familiarize yourself with your own body shape. Different body shapes have their own signature look that can be accentuated by a certain type of clothing.
According to Janie Bryant, an Emmy winning costume designer, there are 4 basic types of body shape, including the apple shape, pear shape, ruler shape and hourglass shape. There are certain types of clothing that fit well with each of these body shapes. The clothing will not only enhance your body parts but also make you more confident and make you feel pretty. However, there are certain styles that do not suit your body type that should be avoided to prevent imbalance to your overall look.
1 The Apple
A woman with an apple shape stores most of her weight in her midsection and there are definitely styles that do not suit your body type. However, they mostly have really great legs. If they wear the wrong type of clothing, they make look shorter and wider. So, an apple should wear something that minimizes the midsection and draws all eyes to their legs. An apple should avoid any bold patterns, such as stripes on tops as this will only draw everyone's eyes on your midsection. As for the style, they should avoid short jackets and sweaters that only skim the waist. Shiny fabrics, like satin, should be avoided. Tapered pants will only make them look shorter and wider. Most importantly, they should avoid shoulder pads because this will exaggerate the disparity of proportions of their body shape.
2 The Pear
A pear stores most of her weight below the waistline. So, they have fuller hips and thighs with narrow shoulders, a smaller bust, and a beautiful slim midriff. A pear should wear something that draws everyone's eyes to their arms and shoulders. They should avoid attention to their hips which is the widest point of their body. They should avoid cargo pants or bottoms with lots of pocket details which will only accentuate their fuller hips and thighs. They should also avoid patterned or light-coloured pants. As for dresses, straight skirts and bias-cut dresses are a no-no for them.
3 The Ruler
This type of body shape has an athletic, lean build and more of a straight up and down figure with fewer curves. The good thing is, this body shape has a similarity to runway models and they can wear almost anything. So, a ruler should wear something that can create some contours to their body and add some femininity to their silhouette. It can be done by accentuating the waist. They should avoid bolero jackets and short-waisted tops which can bisect the figure and minimize their curves. As for the pattern, they should avoid vertical lines, which will only accentuate their ruler shape.
4 The Hourglass
The hourglass shape has a very pretty and curvy body shape with a narrow waist. They have a symmetrical curve with an exaggerated bust and hip lines. An Hourglass should wear something that shows off their tiny waist which is a sexy point of their body. They should avoid anything that hides their body shape, like shifts or trapeze dresses or any style that overemphasizes their hips, like a gathered skirt.
