1. Wash as Directed

Oh, this is so simple but how many of us actually do this? I do now but I admit I have not always obeyed the instructions on how to wash my clothing. If you really want to extend the life of your clothing, be very cautious about how you launder them. Gentle cycle really does mean gentle cycle. If you do not follow the instructions, your clothing may ravel, stretch out or have other bad consequences of not being cared for properly.

2. Line Dry

I line dry a lot of my clothing items, including bras, sweaters and other delicates. I also line dry things when I do not want them to shrink. Line drying seems to be a much easier choice for a lot of clothing items. A lot of clothing items will specify that they need to be line dried. While I always follow instructions on how to wash clothing, I use my own judgment on the drying process.

3. Wear Your Jeans More than Once

This was a concept that was really difficult for me to adjust to. For many years, I washed my jeans after every wearing and felt totally grossed out by the prospect of wearing them more than once. But I have adjusted myself somewhat and now wear my jeans twice before I wash them. Washing your jeans after every wearing will put a lot more wear and tear on them. Some people wear their jeans many more times before washing.

4. Have at Home Clothing and Going out Clothing

Ladies, this is key! If you want to extend the life of your clothing, save your nice clothing for when you go somewhere. Have a few basic outfits to wear at home. For me, I wear yoga pants and t shirts when I am home. This makes your nice clothing last much longer.

5. Invest in Good Quality Clothing

You get what you pay for. That is true of a lot of things in life and that certainly includes clothing. While I cannot afford to spend a fortune on clothing, I do the best I can to make quality purchases. I shop sales and watch for bargains in my favorite brands. I have also learned what brands do not work for me and avoid them like the plague.

6. Wear an Apron While Cooking

Maybe I am just an exceptionally messy cook, but I can hardly prepare a meal without getting something on my clothing. This is very frustrating so I have learned to wear an apron when I cook. A lot of aprons are dull and boring but there are also a lot that are really pretty and girly. I have seen some adorable styles on Amazon.

7. Use a Stain Remover

If you do get a stain on your clothing, do not simply launder as usual and hope for the best. Treat the stain and wash it as soon as possible. There are a variety of quality stain removers on the market today for you to choose from. My personal favorite is the stain stick by Spray n’ Wash. It takes almost everything out.

These little common sense tips will definitely help you to extend the life of your clothing. But they are certainly not all-inclusive. What tips do you follow to extend the life of your clothing?

I saw this jean expert and she said u should only wash jeans twice a uear

Use vinegar instead of softener when you do your laundry! Keeps the fabric and the colors more vivid. And don't worry, your clothes won't smell like vinegar, they just don't really smell or they smell like the washing powder you used

You are right, Eva, I also stopped using softener because I have read that it damages the lycra in nylon stockings and panty hoses.
