7 Tips to Help You Clean out Your Closet ...

I think I speak for everyone when I say that you have to be in exactly the right mood to truly clean out your closet. If you’re not in exactly the right mood, you may stop halfway through your purge, or you may not get rid of as much as you should. When you’re in the mood to completely purge your closet and re-organize it, you know that you can successfully clean your closet!

This is one of the biggest reasons why you must be in the right mood to clean out your closet. To completely clean out your closet, you need to clear everything out of it. Start from scratch. If you weren’t in the right mood, you might just completely stop and leave your entire wardrobe on the floor. However, when you’re in the right mood to clean things up, clearing out your closet will give you a fresh start and will definitely help de-clutter things!

My biggest mistake when it comes to de-cluttering my closet is that I wait a week or two before I donate anything. This has been the result of getting rid of things and regretting it weeks later. Don’t do that, because, like me, you’ll end up with trash bags filled with clothes you’ll never look at again. It can be tempting to wait a few days, but don’t. If you’re truly not wearing the clothes that you’re getting rid of, there is no reason that you should regret the clothes you’re giving away.

There’s nothing as pleasing as seeing everything in order, especially in your closet. If you have a Container Store or Ikea in your area, go organizer-crazy. If not, there are always superstores like Target and Wal-Mart that have storage bins and other organizers to help you out! You may think they’re not necessary, but you’ll love the difference they make!

Adding a little bit of décor can make you want to spend time in your closet, which will inspire you to clean it out. I don’t mean add prints and picture frames per say, but use your clothes as décor. Display shoes on shelves, frame an old outfit with meaning that doesn’t fit anymore, or do something else entirely. The cuter you make your closet, the more inspired you’ll be to clean it out!

I’m a huge offender of this. I do the “hanger trick” among a myriad of other things to get out of actually cleaning out my closet. Don’t wait to see if you’ll wear something again. If you haven’t worn it in a while, get rid of it. If you haven’t worn it in a year or longer, you’re not going to wear it again. Unless you have a plan of when you’re going to wear it again, get rid of it. Be ruthless!

The after-math of cleaning out your closet can be pretty depressing. You once had all of these clothes, and now you have significantly less clothes, and you don’t know how you’re going to put different outfits together all of the time. After you’ve cultivated your new wardrobe, create as many different outfits as you can with what you have. It will help make you excited about your new smaller wardrobe!
