1

Assess

When it comes to tips for recycling clothes the first thing you need to do is to assess them. Check to see what is still wearable and if anything needs repairs. If your clothes are simply out of date you can always update them with a quick DIY. However, if something is irreparable or ill-fitting the chances of it being wearable again are going to be pretty low.

2

Donate

One of the easiest ways to recycle your clothing is to give them to a new home. Take the clothes you no longer wear and donate them to a charity or opportunity store. If you no longer need the clothes, why keep them in your wardrobe? All they’re doing is taking up space and this way they’ll be put to good use.

3

Swap

A great way to recycle your clothes is to hold a swap meet with your friends. Pick a location, get everyone to bring a selection of clothes, and get swapping! If you’ve ever eyed off any of your friends’ clothing, this is a fun way to get your hands on their style. This is also a great way to catch up with friends and can double as a social event. Also keep an eye out for organised swap meets in your area for a broader range of clothing and swapping opportunities.

4

Sell

Recycling your clothes can also lead to making a bit of extra cash. If your clothes are still in good condition try selling them to a consignment store, on eBay, or at the markets. This is a great way to recoup a little bit of money from those designer goods you don’t wear any more or that piece of clothing you bought for an event and only ended up wearing once.

5

Update

DIYs are all the rage right now and with good reason. They’re a great way to recycle and update your clothes on a budget. Make a plain piece of clothing a little bit more trend-based by sewing on some sequins or adding some studded embellishments. It doesn’t take a lot of skill and they’re fun projects to tackle on the weekends.

Chop

One of the easiest ways to breathe new life into your old clothes is by making a few alterations. Make a long skirt look fresher by hemming it a few inches shorter, turn a pair of pants into shorts, chop the sleeves off of a shirt, or add some cut out details to a piece of clothing. Some basic sewing skills are required, but once you’ve got them sorted a whole world of alterations awaits you!

7

Remake

If you’ve got the skills as a seamstress, turn your old clothes into something completely different. Turn a shapeless piece of clothing into something with a more tailor-made fit, or turn a dress into separates. Create something that is a one-off and uniquely you. Alternatively, if you like a certain fabric, pick the clothing apart and store the fabric pieces for future projects.

If you’re thinking about cleaning out your wardrobe or giving it a shake up, you might consider recycling your clothes at some point in the process. These are just some things you might like to consider. Do you have any tips for recycling your clothes?
