1. Red Dresses

One of the standout red carpet trends so far has been the red dress. Plenty of celebrities have been seen sporting a red dress this Award Season. At the recent Golden Globes, they seemed to dominate the red carpet. From bright crimson to dark oxblood, all different shades of red are in style this season.

2. All Black

Black is often seen as a ‘safe’ choice on the red carpet but that doesn’t make it any less fashionable. From Amy Poehler’s black pantsuit on the Golden Globes red carpet to Jennifer Lawrence’s black cut out gown at the Critic’s Choice Awards, there are plenty of fresh takes on all-black dressing this Award Season.

Frequently asked questions

3. Mermaid Style

Fishtail gowns scream of Old Hollywood glamour, which is probably why they’re a favourite on the red carpet. Amy Adams, Jessica Alba, and Kelly Osbourne all wore mermaid-esque fishtail gowns to the Golden Globes, which is usually a good indicator of what we’ll be seeing at the upcoming Oscars.

4. Nearly Nude

Nude dresses, sheer panels, and cut outs have left little to the imagination on this year’s red carpets. Whether it’s Amanda Seyfried’s beautiful blush gown or Kerry Washington’s sheer panelled dress at the Golden Globes, the key to making this trend work is to work a demure, feminine angle.

5. Evening Embellishments

Embellishments are everywhere right now. And really, what’s a red carpet without a little bit of bling? From subtle gold embellishments a la Nicole Kidman at the Golden Globes to all out sequins on Naomi Watts at the People’s Choice Awards, embellishments are a guaranteed way to shine on the red carpet.

6. Thigh High Splits

It seems that Angelina Jolie’s thigh split gown at last year’s Oscars has kick started a trend for this year’s Award Season. A range of celebrities such as Halle Berry, Eva Longoria, and Lea Michele have all been seen sporting dresses with revealing thigh high splits.

7. White out

Head to toe white looks have been trending for some time now. It’s also a look that easily translates onto the red carpet. From Taylor Swift in her plunging v-neck dress at the People’s Choice Awards to Anne Hathaway’s minimalist ensemble at the Golden Globes, white is oh so chic this Award Season.

8. Long Sleeves

When you think about it, long sleeved dresses make sense during Award Season. These events are held during a Northern Hemisphere winter, which means that there’s a high chance of there being a chill in the air. Long sleeved dresses are proving popular so far this year, with plenty of celebrities choosing to wear them.

9. Gold Touches

Red carpet glamour wouldn’t be complete without plenty of gold touches. Not content with keeping it limited to jewellery and accessories, now gold touches can be found on dresses as well. At the Golden Globes, Kate Hudson and Michelle Dockery both sported stunning statement gowns with gold embellishments around the neck and shoulders.

10. Backless

Backless dresses are also making their mark on the red carpet. Actresses like Naomi Watts and Julianna Margulies rocked open back gowns at the Golden Globes, while Marion Cotillard took a more feminine and flirty approach in a full-skirted cocktail dress at the Critic’s Choice Awards.

These are some of the more popular trends we’ve noticed this Award Season. It’ll be interesting to see how many of these we see later on at the Oscars. Have you spotted any other red carpet trends this Award Season?
