7 Quick Ways to Shop Your Closet and save Money ...

I had never heard about shopping your closet until about a year ago. Since then, I can't believe how much money I've saved. Now, if you don't have much in your closet, this probably won't help you. If you're like most women I know, your closet is crammed full. Think of your closet as your own personal shopping mall just waiting for you to discover all the bargains within.

1. Find the Latest Styles

Maybe you bought that bright yellow shirt a few years ago, but didn't really feel it was in style. Odds are, it got pushed to the back of your closet. Every year, there are brand new trends. You probably already have quite a few clothes to match those trends, like that bright yellow shirt. Shopping your closet is a great way to find clothes you pushed to the side that are trending now. Imagine not having to spend a dime to get the latest looks.

2. Make New Matches

We all have our favorite outfits. That red blouse always goes with that cute black skirt. While that's nice, it severely limits the number of possibilities in your closet. Take a long hard look at what you have at your disposal. How many other skirts and pants would that blouse look good with? Could you pair it with a jacket you already have? Re-organize your closet to create brand new outfits. Your friends will never know those new looks are from clothes you already had.

3. Make Everything Visible

I'm horrible for feeling like I have nothing wear only to find the perfect shirt a year later when I'm going through things. I could've saved a lot of money if only I had known the shirt was there. The key is to re-organize your closet so it's easy to see everything you have. This includes shoes, shirts, pants, skirts, belts and so on. Try organizing by color and season to quickly find all your clothes so you don't have to always shop for something new.

4. Alter Clothes

If you have the skills, create brand new looks from your existing clothes with a few alterations. A pair of slightly short jeans could easily become your new favorite pair of capris. A plain blouse could get a makeover by adding a lace panel in the front. Even if you can't do it yourself, it's usually cheaper to have something altered slightly than buying something new. It's the ideal way to shop your closet and still get something different.

5. Use Pinterest for Inspiration

I love using Pinterest to get new fashion ideas. I take my favorite ideas and head straight to my closet. With a little searching, it's easy to find exactly what I'm looking for. No need to shop anywhere else by my own way too full closet. For instance, I'd never thought about using that overly large tee as a strapless dress. All it takes is someone else's creativity to create a whole new fashion world for you.

6. Pair Casual with Professional

Usually, you keep your casual clothes separate from your professional ones. However, if you pair the two, you get a completely new look. Try pairing a striped suit jacket with jeans and a tee. Add dressy slacks to a tank and large belt. The possibilities are endless. You don't always have to follow the rules. It's okay to mix the two styles. In fact, it's actually rather popular.

7. Play with Accessories

My favorite way to shop my closet is to play with accessories. Belts, scarves, purses, wraps and pins are my secret weapons. A few accessories drastically changes a single outfit. I added a wrap and belt to my usual tee and jeans and everyone thought I'd bought a brand new outfit. There were surprised to find out it was simply a remake on my favorite outfit. If you don't have many accessories, now's the time to splurge. Add these to shopping your closet and you have a world of possibilities.

Shopping your closet is all about finding new ways to wear what you already have. You can still be stylish and wear new looks without spending a fortune on a new wardrobe. Get creative and start searching those closets. Have you ever tried closet shopping?
