Ever since I can remember, Halloween has always been my favorite holiday. When I was little it meant dressing up like a princess and getting boatloads of candy. It still means dressing up now that I'm older…but I go to parties with my friends instead of trick or treating. But regardless of what I am doing, picking out a costume for Halloween is the most fun I have all year. But sometimes it can be kind of difficult to know where to start when there are so many options. HEre are some of my awesome tips to help you figure out where to start and how to put together an awesome costume. Who knows, you might even win a costume contest.
As Halloween approaches, don’t head over to the nearest costume store. Head to your closet instead, costumes are always more fun when they are homemade. It also allows you to be more creative and make a costume your own unique creation rather than just buying some already put together ensemble.
2. Combine Ideas
Can’t decide between a pop singer and a zombie? Why not a zombie pop singer? Halloween is a time to be creative; why limit yourself to one idea? Combine all of your ideas for a truly unique and one of a kind costume that will make you stand out.
3. Make It a Group Effort
Everything is more fun when you’re with your friends. So why would putting together a costume be any different? You can raid each other's closets and do each other's makeup. Get all your friends together and brainstorm ideas. After all, five heads are better than one.
4. Be Funny
Why be a slutty witch when you can run around making people laugh till they drop their candy corn! Having a funny costume will make you stand out from the crowd. You’ll also be sure to get tons of compliments from your friends on your awesome costume and your even more awesome sense of humor.
5. Play off Pop Culture
You could go with the traditional costumes that people have been wearing for years. Or you could take something modern and fresh and turn it into a costume. Try a character from a recent movie, or a political figure from the election. Whatever people are talking about, turn it into an ironic and hilarious costume.
6. Be a Kid Again
Halloween is the time to let your inner kid out. I’m not saying you should go trick or treating (unless you’re actually with kids). But your costume can be a trip down memory lane. Dress up as a character from your favorite childhood TV show or as a toy you used to play with. Your friends will be jealous they didn’t think of it first.
7. Go All out
Halloween is not the time to hold back. It’s the time to go absolutely crazy. What other time do you get to dress up totally wild and insane and no one can judge you for it. So why stop out an outfit? Add in a funky mask, big flashy jewelry, giant hair accessories, and over the top shoes. There is no limit to how much you can add in to your costume.
Did these tips work for you? What are your ideas for a Halloween costume this year? What have you worn in the past? Do you have any other tips for a unique Halloween costume?
