She Made the Tan Popular

Among the many facts about Coco Chanel, one is that she made the tan popular. After a trip to Cannes, she came back looking sun kissed and fabulous. Because of her popularity in Paris at the time, women wanted to emulate her and look like her. After her tan skin became known, having sun kissed skin was all the rage in Paris in that time. This was unusual because up to that time, having pale skin was more common and considered more elegant than tan skin.

She Sprayed Chanel No 5 Throughout Her Home

One of the most fun facts about Coco Chanel is that she had Chanel No. 5 sprayed throughout her home. I am not sure why, but I love this fact. It says to me that Chanel enjoyed the finer things in life and wanted to be surrounded by elegance. But not only that, she wanted a constant reminder of her hard work. Plus Chanel No. 5 might be my favorite fragrance ever so I am a bit jealous.

Her Real Name is Gabrielle

She was born Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel after being born in Samur. When she grew up she started a career as a singer. Because her most popular song was called “Qui qu’a vu Coco,” she quickly got the nickname Coco. And that name stuck with her throughout her fashion career.

She Was a Licensed Hat Maker

Not many people know this fun fact about Coco Chanel, but she started her career as a hat-maker. She started off small, making hats for friends. But eventually her business started to boom and she started to expand her lines to include clothes. But this was not possible without the support of her love Arthur Capel, who supported her in opening her first hat boutique.

She Invented the Little Black Dress

Another one of the facts about Coco Chanel is that she is credited with inventing the ever-popular “Little Black Dress.” She introduced it in 1926, and while many designers change their fashions up every year, Chanel kept her LBD relatively the same from year to year because of its incredible popularity.

Her Lucky Number Was 5

It makes sense that Chanel named her most popular perfume Chanel No. 5 because 5 is her lucky number. Not only did she name her perfume after this number, but also released it on the 5th day of the 5th month in 1922. When designing the bottle for her signature perfume, she went against the popularity of extravagant bottles. Chanel wanted people to focus on the perfume and the scent rather than what the bottle looked like. And it paid off because Chanel No. 5 is still one of the most popular scents today.

She Revolutionized Women's Clothing

Another one of the fun facts about Coco Chanel is that her concept of comfortable and practical clothing was groundbreaking at the time. She lived in a time where corsets were common and women were supposed to wear extravagant dresses and dainty jewelry. Chanel went against the grain and designed clothes that were for the everyday woman and were functional. Her suit became famous for its simple cut and fabric and how it flattered women without forcing them to suck in their stomachs. She also is credited with bringing costume jewelry to fame with large ornate pieces.

Coco Chanel is still one of the most well known names in fashion to this day. She lived an interesting life and there is no doubting that she was an incredible woman. While some people are more familiar with her clothing, it is important to know a bit about her and learn what inspired her timeless pieces. Where Thoughts and Opinions Converge

Chanel - erm, think again Gabrielle was a Nazi sympathiser and a thoroughly unpleasant individual. Yes, she was very clever and an opportunist but to say she's a role model for anything other than hard work and ingenuity... No mention of the iconic 2.55 bag, the reason for the matelassee stitching, or the chain and leather strap. No mention of her signature colour palette or her use of jersey.

Love Chanel :)

love it so much

I'm named after the her couldn't have picked a better role model

Thanks. Is always a joy to know a bit more about Coco. She is one of the rare wonders the world gave us.

I think her dark, personal, life overshadowed her accomplishments. Call me judgmental, but no matter how hard I try, every time I see a Channel No. 5, I cant shake up Nazi images out of my head....

She is my fashion icon my wardrobe consists of alot of black

She is my fashion icon

She was also a Nazi sympathizer and spy, and slept with any man who she thought could help her get ahead. Not someone to idolize.
