1. With Short Skirts

Ankle boots are super flattering, provided you manage to pair them with the right ensemble. If you’re keen to go for a flirty feminine look, a skirt or dress is obviously a great option. It is important, however, that you get the length of yours right: if it’s too long, you boot-and-skirt combo will leave your legs looking stunted. Shorter is better, experts suggest, so hike up that hemline and stick on a pair of stockings if you don’t fancy showing quite so much skin.

2. With Matching Tights

If you’re keen to elongate your leg as much as you possibly can, go for an ankle boot with a hidden platform and wear with a pair of opaque tights or stockings in a matching colour. The continuity between leg and shoe, along with the extra height from the platform will have your legs going on forever.

3. With Skinnies

Skinny jeans and ankle boots make a classic combination. Beware: if you are a little on the short side, you might want to steer clear of flat variations. Instead, go for something quite sleek with a heel and pull the jean over the top of your boot. This will lengthen your leg and narrow down your calves: very flattering.

4. To Contrast

There are myriad variations of ankle boot on the market: some are sleek, shiny and chic, others are a little more rough-and-ready. Capitalise on this year’s reworking of nineties trends and get yourself a pair of Chelsea’s or heavier, outdoors inspired hiking boots and pair these with a super short frock in a flirty, floral print.

5. With Complimentary Accessories

Use your fab ankle boots to really pull your outfit together. Try to source belts and bags in a leather with a similar colouring and texture: worn all together, the matching accessories will take your ensemble up to the next level of chic.

6. With Leggings

In order to be fully appreciated, ankle boots need to be worn with a slim fitting trouser. Skinny denims are, obviously, a good option here, but the classic legging is equally as effective. Pair yours with flat, vintage-inspired leather boots, a longer-length linen shirt and a skinny belt for a look that’s casual but trendy, or tuck them into high heeled ankle boots and wear with a super short A-line shift.

7. Demurely

As you will have noticed, ankle boots look best when they’re worn with very short skirts and dresses and uber-tight skinnies and leggings. As a result, the look sometimes runs the risk of becoming a little ‘trashy.’ Avoid this by simply ensuring that you balance the revealing elements of your outfit with some that are a little more demure: pair a short mini with conservative cardigan, for example.

Ankle boots are great: they’re versatile, they’re diverse and they can be very flattering. Unfortunately, however, they’re not the easiest items to pull off. Hopefully, this list of 7 ways to wear ankle boots will help to get you on the right track. Do you have any great tips to add to it?
