1. H&M X Marni

While we’re on the topic of the Marni for H&M collection, let’s take a look at what’s in store. In the brand’s trademark style, this collection will feature a range of signature fabrics and prints, strong colours, and sporty utilitarian elements. The women’s collection will feature full pleated skirts, dresses, cropped pants, and jacquard knits. The men’s collection will focus on relaxed masculine classics. This collection will be available from March 8, 2012 both in store and online.

2. H&M X Karl Lagerfeld

This collaboration with Karl Lagerfeld in 2004 started it all. It was the very first designer collaboration for H&M. The exclusive collection was available in store and sold out in major metropolitan areas within hours. This collection wasn’t without controversy though. Lagerfeld famously complained about the chain store making his designs in larger sizes, saying they were designed for slim and slender figures.

3. H&M X Versace

This collection is another recent offering. This collection has a distinct Versace feel to it and contains bold colours, bright botanical prints, and leather cutwork pieces. The pieces in this collection definitely embody the glamorous frivolity behind the Versace brand. Received to a mixed reception, there’s still no doubting that this designer collaboration was a coup for H&M.

4. H&M X Stella McCartney

When it was announced that Stella McCartney would be designing a collection for H&M, there was much anticipation surrounding the release. So much so, that there were reports of frenzied scenes and mob-like stampedes when it went on sale. There were crisp blazers, satiny dresses, and zippered skinny jeans. The pieces were understated, feminine, and most importantly, wearable. Despite this, the collection did draw criticism for being ‘bland’.

5. H&M X Lanvin

In 2010, French fashion House Lanvin designed a winter collection for the Swedish retail giant. The Lanvin Hearts H&M collection was an instant hit, and possibly one of the most anticipated designer collaborations yet. Highlights of the collection included a tuxedo jacket, tiered ballerina dress, and ribbon-adorned shoes. Prices ranged from as little as $9.95 for a lipstick to $300+ for a dress.

6. H&M X Comme Des Garçons

Cult Japanese label Comme des Garçons was enlisted by H&M to design both men’s and women’s lines for their 2008 diffusion collection. This collection was designed in true Comme des Garçons style and featured a range of directional and avant garde garments. Staying true to the labels’ roots, the collection launched exclusively in Japan before being rolled out around the world.

7. H&M X Jimmy Choo

Jimmy Choo shoes are some of the most covetable in the world. Just the mention of the brand will have women salivating. So imagine the reaction when it was announced that the designer label would be collaborating with chain store H&M? The collection not only consisted of shoes but also bags, accessories, and a women’s clothing line.

Designer collaborations are always a strong point for H&M. They allow their regular customers to experience a high-fashion rush while still maintaining a budget. What are your thoughts on designer collaborations? Are there any that have really stood out in your experience?
